Software engineer or computer programmer

Get with the program!

It’s not hard to imagine the importance of IT in the aerospace industry, especially when it comes to software development. Whether it’s in the aircraft, the control towers, or even simulators and numeric control machines that manufacture components: software is everywhere, and it’s constantly changing! Software engineers and computer programmers research, imagine program, test and install all things related to computer intelligence (software applications, operating systems, data warehouses, telecommunications software, etc.). They also make sure all the information is document for the design teams and users, in addition to overseeing software updates.

Schooling

To become an engineer, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer engineering or computer science, as well as membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. A postgraduate degree in a related discipline may also be required.

To become a programmer, a college diploma in computer science is usually required, and an undergraduate university diploma (in computer systems, computer systems engineering, software engineering or mathematics) is a huge asset, along with computer programming experience in another sector.
